Switching cells with a switching element, which are subjected to an overvoltage in the arc current, are usually connected in series in an electric power distribution network, whereby the cells are electrically connected in series in an alternating manner. For switching off the cells, the alternating voltage must be maintained and the supply current interrupted. If the supply voltage is interrupted, a residual voltage is formed across the switching cell. This residual voltage may be so great that it will destroy the switching cell. In addition, the residual voltage may cause serious damage to an external electric system, such as a monitoring system, supplied from the switching cell. In order to avoid the damage, an apparatus, known as a "regulation cell", is usually provided. The "regulation cell" is arranged in series with the switching cell, whereby it ensures that the residual voltage in the switching cell is reduced.
A "regulation cell" usually comprises a battery and a current source. The battery supplies the current to the "regulation cell". If the supply voltage has a residual voltage, the current decreases to a defined value. When the residual voltage disappears, the current increases to the value required for operating the switching cell.
